(see case HKKPTR)
Dear friends, community, critics,
After an outcall 2 years ago, we decided to remove our crew member HKKPTR from the collective. The background to this was an affected-orientated decision. For us, this specifically means giving the affected person the power of definition and fulfilling their needs and wishes. The space should be opened up for the person's demand(s), the assumption of responsibility by the HKKPTR and a critical accompaniment of their debate.
For us, taking responsibility represents a critical approach to one's own transgressive behaviour. In addition, we see this responsibility as a transparent way of dealing with the public, but also with other collaborators. We also believe that content-related work with the concept of transformative justice and feminist literature is an integral part of this. For us, part of responsibility is also responsibility as a community, without which such a process is hardly possible.
We have used the time since then to critically examine perpetration, allyship and our entanglements in it as male and female socialised people. We had not dealt with the issues sufficiently and had to learn more, expose and recognise our entanglements and try to resolve them.
In practical terms, this meant implementing and expanding our own awareness concepts with external support at our events and corresponding training measures for the collective. These processes were already in place before the incident, but have now been re-examined and intensified. There were also differences of opinion among us in the collective on how to position ourselves in relation to the incident. These disagreements triggered an internal debate, which was fruitful in its process and resulted in the decision to come to terms with the incident together.
HKKPTR has been working on his transgressive behaviour in a critical masculinity group for 3 years, 1.5 years before the outcall, after his behaviour was mirrored for the first time. He has also sought professional help (therapy). He has also been in continuous close contact with us to reflect on his transgressive behaviour. We consider this exchange to be important in order to give him different perspectives on his behaviour and the way he deals with it, but also to gain this knowledge for us. We see this as part of community accountability.
We believe it is essential to remove people who use violence under certain conditions in order to make the space safer for others. Nevertheless, the process should not end here in order to achieve long-term effects. Critical support and the assumption of responsibility can be crucial in this process in order to initiate a sustainable change in patriarchal structures. Misbehaviour does not stop with exclusion, but merely shifts to other circles.
We have been discussing for a long time what a transformative reappraisal can look like, taking into account the demands of those affected - even if there is no time limit for the demands. It was and is therefore essential for us to remain open to dialogue, but at the same time to find a feasible way of dealing with these circumstances.
We are also aware that successful cases of reintegration are rare to non-existent. This is often rightly the case because there is insufficient acceptance of responsibility on the part of the perpetrators of violence. As a community, we believe that the principle of exclusion in our community is internalised by this fact and that ways of going beyond this must be learned. This is a feat that we are only capable of carrying as a collective within society. We see the whole thing as a process that is never complete. We hope for a constructive and differentiated exchange. For us, HKKPTR's debate harbours the potential for practical change.
As a result, we want to give HKKPTR the opportunity to share the stage with us at a number of events.
As part of this process, HKKPTR has decided to donate half of his fee from his performances in 2024 to feminist projects with immediate effect.
For your comments, questions or constructive criticism about our decision, we have set up an e-mail address that is managed by two independent Flinta people.
