case HKKPTR
Dear friends, community, critics,
Following an outcall (on July 31, 2022), we have decided to remove our crew member HKKPTR from the collective. The reason for this was a decision made in the best interests of those affected. For us, this means giving the affected person the power to define the situation and to meet their needs and wishes. The space should be opened up for the person's demands, for HKKPTR to take responsibility, and for critical accompaniment of their confrontation.
For us, taking responsibility represents a critical approach to our own transgressive behavior. We also see this responsibility as a transparent approach towards the public, but also towards other collaborators. Furthermore, we believe that working with the concept of transformative justice and feminist literature is an integral part of this. For us, part of responsibility is also responsibility as a community, without which such a process would hardly be possible.
We have used the time since then to critically examine perpetration, allyship, and our entanglement in them as male- and female-socialized persons. We had not dealt sufficiently with these issues and had to learn more, expose our entanglements, recognize them, and try to resolve them.
In practical terms, this means implementing and expanding our own awareness concepts with external support at our events and providing appropriate training measures for the collective. These processes were already underway before the incident, but it brought new light on them and intensified them. There were also differences among us in the collective regarding how to position ourselves in relation to the incident. These disagreements sparked an internal debate, which was fruitful in its process and led to the decision to work through the issue together.
Since April 2021, after his behavior was first brought to his attention, HKKPTR has been working on his transgressive behavior in a critical masculinity group. He has also sought professional help (therapy). In addition, he has been in close contact with us on an ongoing basis since his transgressive behavior. We consider this exchange important in order to give him different perspectives on his actions and his confrontation, but also to gain this knowledge for ourselves. We see this as part of community accountability.
We consider it essential to remove violent individuals from certain spaces under certain conditions in order to make them safer for other people. Nevertheless, the process should not end here in order to achieve long-term effects. Critical support and accountability can be crucial in this process in order to initiate lasting change in patriarchal structures. Misconduct does not end with exclusion, but merely shifts to other circles.
We have discussed at length what a transformative reappraisal could look like, taking into account the demands of those affected—even if there is no time limit for these demands. That is why it was and remains essential for us to remain open to dialogue, while at the same time finding a feasible way of dealing with the situation under these circumstances.
We are also aware that successful cases of reintegration are rare to non-existent. This is often rightly so, because perpetrators of violence do not take sufficient responsibility. As a community, we believe that the principle of exclusion is internalized in our community due to this fact, and that ways of going beyond this must be learned. This is a feat of strength that we can only achieve as a collective within society. We see this as a process that is never complete. We hope for a constructive and nuanced exchange. HKKPTR
For us, confrontation has the potential to bring about practical change.
As a result, we want to give HKKPTR the opportunity to share the stage with us at several events.
In this process, HKKPTR has decided to donate half of its fees from its performances in 2024 to feminist projects with immediate effect.
We have set up an email address for your comments, questions, or constructive criticism regarding our decision, which will be managed by two independent Flinta individuals.
